An artist talk by Cheryl Harper and gallery conversation led by Eszter Kutas

I am a descendant of the oppressed who married into a family who oppressed.”</blockquote><blockquote> - Cheryl Harper</blockquote>Please join us, in person or virtually, on Wednesday May 25th from 6:00 - 7:30 PM for an artist talk by Cheryl Harper followed by a gallery conversation led by Eszter Kutas with Cheryl Harper. Harper’s artwork is currently on display at the InLiquid Gallery as part of a two person exhibition, <a href="https://inliquid.org/exhibitions/what-are-we-claiming/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">What Are We Claiming?</a> which investigates family lineage, and the stories that are inherited, discovered, and imagined. Cheryl Harper, trained as both a fine artist and an art historian, works in both fields, with one discipline informing the other. In her talk, she will discuss how her &quot;Passages&quot; project evolved through historical research and the uncanny paths that informed this installation project. Harper&#x27;s presentation will take the audience to South Carolina, Georgia, New York City, and Prague to search for family history, with some surprises in store. She will discuss her multidisciplinary approach to making art, including family objects, sewing and applique, and printing hand-made wallpapers. Harper explains how this project, while extremely personal, is simultaneously universal in its message.In the following gallery talk, Philadelphia Holocaust Remembrance Foundation’s Executive Director Eszter Kutas will lead a discussion with Cheryl Harper to discuss how artifacts are imbued with meaning, especially after great trauma. What stories can we tell with family heirlooms and saved objects? How are objects evidence of a family’s experience? What does it mean when we do not have physical reminders of the past?Through understanding historical context and Cheryl Harper’s artistic process, participants will have a lens into how families and communities use storytelling to safeguard legacy… even complicated histories that might be hard to reckon with and even harder to share.

This program is brought to you by InLiquid in partnership with the Philadelphia Holocaust Remembrance Foundation.Cheryl Harper lives outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her higher education reflects her interests and she developed into both an artist and an art historian, missing one discipline when not active as the other, successfully balancing both. Her studio and curatorial work has been well received by critics and the public.Trained as a printmaker, her earlier work focused primarily on large one-of-a-kind woodcuts. However, after several years she decided to bring her graphic and narrative sensibility to sculpture. She wanted to explore a major difference in scale and medium. These have further transitioned into an installation practice.Recognition for her body of work includes her selection as a Fleisher Art Memorial Challenge winner in 2008 and recognition such as the first prize in sculpture at Art of the State in Harrisburg. In the national show, ARTship Olympia, she engaged a larger audience beyond the artworld. Her political pieces are shown nationally. Most recently, her installation, Passages: An Installation in Progress by Cheryl Harper, debuted at the Maier Museum of Art in Lynchburg, Virginia. She brings her interest in biography and social issues to her work, documenting the foibles of American politics and social issues through her unique artistic voice.Eszter Kutas, currently serves as the Philadelphia Holocaust Remembrance Foundations’s (PHRF) Executive Director. A native of Budapest, Hungary, Eszter is the granddaughter of four Holocaust survivors. Kutas’ commitment to the Holocaust Memorial project is both personal and professional; as staff attorney at The Claims Conference, Eszter oversaw the administration of a $1.25 Billion fund established by a consortium of Swiss Banks and supported the assessment of more than 80,000 Holocaust restitution claims across international borders.Eszter earned her J.D. at the University of Eotvos Lorand in Hungary and her LL.M. at the University of Pennsylvania Law School.ABOUT INLIQUIDThe InLiquid Gallery is the physical expression of InLiquid’s mission as a hub for visual art in Philadelphia.
