🧠 Lecture: "Incomputable Intelligence"
🎤 Speaker: Artist and Researcher, Ari Melenciano
In an age rapidly advancing toward artificial general intelligence, how do we understand ourselves, our humanity, and the incomputable? Drawing on a decade of engagement with advanced technologies, Artist and Researcher Ari Melenciano explores where the machine ends and the human begins.
Melenciano understands Incomputable Intelligence as a branch of technoculture shaped by two key notions: the pneumareal, dimensions of sentience that exceed conscious language, and créolucence, the particular lens formed when inhabiting multiple epistemologies at once: Black in the Western world, woman in patriarchy, artist through technology, scientific thinker humbled by the unknowable, and descendant of the Caribbean geopolitical project.
Her work investigates forms of intelligence that elude computational systems and the ways culture operates as a cybernetic field. Melenciano has taught at NYU, Pratt Institute, Hunter College, and Parsons School of Design, and her work has been presented at the Museum of Modern Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Venice Biennale, Sundance Film Festival, and the Museum of the Future in Dubai. She is the founder of Afrotectopia and has researched and developed machine learning and AI technologies at Google’s Creative Lab.
