Description:

A Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework helps schools and organizations structure their resources effectively. In this model, Tier One supports are accessible to all learners, Tier Two supports address the needs of specific groups, and Tier Three supports are tailored to the unique requirements of individuals. Traditionally, AAC device selection often occurs through a detailed assessment process and is provided as a Tier Three support. But what if AAC devices were offered more broadly to include Tier Two or even Tier One supports? Imagine if any learner over the age of three who entered a school and did not use intelligible verbal speech as their primary form of communication automatically received an AAC device without waiting for an initial AAC assessment. How would this shift impact outcomes?

This concept, known as the Specific Language System First Approach, reimagines AAC selection and implementation. This session will explore the benefits of this approach in supporting language development for AAC users while providing strategies to ensure learners who need alternative systems or individualized Tier Three supports receive the tools they need to become effective communicators—able to express anything, anytime, in any way, to anyone.

Learner Outcomes:

  • Describe the key components of the Specific Language System First (SLSF) Approach and its alignment with a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework.
  • Analyze the potential impact of implementing AAC as a Tier One or Tier Two support on learner outcomes, equity, and improved language development.
  • Explore inclusive AAC implementation strategies that prioritize early access to robust language systems while also identifying when individualized Tier Three supports are necessary.
