Frequently asked questions

Do I need any prior sailing experience?

No. This is a course for beginners or people looking for a refresher to get them back into sailing.

Do I need to be a good swimmer?

No swimming experience is necessary. Students will be in lifejackets while on the water.

What type of boats will the class use?

All of the boats in the class are dinghy-type sailboats. We have a fleet of 420s, RS Quests, Flying Scots, Sunfish, and Lasers.

What happens if there is inclement weather?

The class doesn't go out in winds over 20mph or if there is a threat of a thunderstorm. We will do our best to host a make-up class

What does a typical class day look like?

We strive to spend as much time on the water as possible. With the exception of the first class, all other days we will be on the water. A typical class starts with rigging the boats, followed by a chalk talk, then a land drill, water drill and sailing, get back to derig, and then debrief.

How old do participants need to be?

8 years old if accompanied by a parent otherwise 12 if not with a parent. This class is not a dedicated junior sailing class, but we enjoy having a small number of youth participants in the class. We usually sail 2 person sailboats so I recommend that juniors enroll with a friend or siblings.

Do I need to bring my own lifejacket?

No. We provide all participants with a PFD. You are welcome to bring your own if you like.

Can I get a refund if my summer plans change?

Refunds can not be processed after 06/13.
