LEAP Open House

LEAP’s primary research strategy is to improve near-term climate projections by merging physical modeling with machine learning across a continuum from expertise in climate science and climate modeling to cutting-edge machine learning algorithms. The benefits will be significant for both the climate and data sciences communities. Climate scientists and modelers struggle to fully integrate the wealth of existing datasets into their models, while machine learning algorithms have been good at emulating and interpolating but have difficulties extrapolating or predicting extremes. By combining both approaches, LEAP will trigger a significant advancement for data science algorithms applied to physical problems. LEAP will incorporate physics and causal mechanisms into machine learning algorithms for better generalization and extrapolation, while optimally using the wealth of data available to climate science, in order to better predict the future.

The <a href="https://leap.columbia.edu/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">LEAP (Learning the Earth with AI and Physics) Science and Technology Center</a> invites you to our first Open House at the Innovation Hub at 2276 12th Ave. on Thursday, July 14 at 3:00 p.m. LEAP was launched in the Fall of 2021 at Columbia University’s campus, with funding from NSF. The center’s primary research strategy is to improve Earth System Models by merging physical knowledge with machine learning. LEAP STC draws on a continuum of expertise in climate science and climate modeling to cutting-edge machine learning algorithms. LEAP will incorporate physics and causal mechanisms into machine learning algorithms for better generalization and extrapolation, while optimally using the wealth of data available to climate science, in order to better predict the future amid a changing climate. LEAP has a wide array of education and research experiences for students. In this open house, you will learn about LEAP’s research projects, and hear about experiences of current LEAP student participants. The program will be accessible via Zoom for those that are not in the NYC area. Those that are joining in-person will have a social networking opportunity with light snacks and refreshments.
