Better understand how nonprofits operate and how board members can play effective and satisfying roles in leadership positions.

The Lead with purpose training series prepares individuals to apply their skills, interests, and experiences in effective nonprofit board service.Participants completing this eight-session, interactive, virtual series will:<ul><li>Be prepared to lead in the nonprofit boardroom</li><li>Receive tools for immediate use</li><li>Gain access to continued board support and resources through a LinkedIn Lead with purpose Alumni group and quarterly “Time with our Experts” sessions with financial, legal, and human resources professionals and BoardSource Certified Nonprofit Board Consultants from Hedges</li></ul>The eight, virtual sessions will be held over lunch every other Thursday starting on August 10. On November 30, there will be an in-person graduation and networking event at Level Two Coworking at the Shops at Perry Crossing in Plainfield. You can find a description of all eight sessions and the in-person event below. Session 1: Nonprofit Fundamentals (August 10)Boards that lead with purpose are informed and equipped. Most people know nonprofits make our communities stronger, but few people know how they operate. In this session, individuals will learn the purpose and characteristics of nonprofit organizations, how they are structured, governed, and funded, and the unique role they play in society.Session 2: Choosing Your Cause (August 24)Boards that lead with purpose share a passion for their cause. Did you know there are over 1,900 nonprofit organizations in Central Indiana? In this session, individuals interested in serving on a nonprofit board will explore their personal passions and learn how and where to find meaningful board service opportunities in their community.Session 3: Core Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards (September 7)Boards that lead with purpose know their role. In this session, individuals looking to better understand the responsibilities of board service will learn the essential accountabilities of the nonprofit board in alignment with leading practices.Session 4: Effective Staff and Board Roles (September 21)Boards that lead with purpose work as a team. In this session, individuals seeking to maximize the strengths and effectiveness of executive and board leadership will learn the complementary yet distinct roles that staff and board members play in nonprofit organizations.Session 5: Building a Thriving Board (October 5)Boards that lead with purpose govern with excellence. In this session, individuals looking to improve the composition and functionality of a nonprofit board will learn best practices in recruitment, onboarding, and rotation in alignment with an organization’s mission.Session 6: Setting Vision and Strategy (October 19)Boards that lead with purpose plan with vision and strategy. In this session, individuals looking to understand the board’s responsibility in setting vision and planning for a sustainable future will learn the four essential pillars of nonprofit organizational health and how to apply strategic planning best practices in each.Session 7: Fundraising Essentials for Board Members (November 2)Boards that lead with purpose aren’t afraid to fundraise. In this session, individuals looking to fulfill the fundraising responsibilities of nonprofit board membership will learn successful ways to engage in the four-part fundraising process.Session 8: Activating Board Committees (November 16)Boards that lead with purpose empower high-performing committees. In this session, individuals seeking to maximize productivity through board committees will learn common structures and leading practices for effective committee functionality and leadership.I﻿n-Person Graduation and Networking Event (November 30)Graduates will be invited to a graduation and networking event held at Level Two Coworking in Plainfield for heavy appetizers and drinks. They'll be able to meet the other participants in the class as well as local, Hendricks County nonprofits looking for new board members.

If cost is a concern, there are scholarships available to lessen that burden thanks to funding from the Hendricks County Community Foundation.
