Birders will be censusing the Laurel Watershed for bird species and abundance.

Welcome to the Laurel Watershed Premier BioBlitz event!

Join us on Saturday June 8, 2024 from 6 AM - 5 PM at the Laurel Community Center for a fun-filled day of discovering the unique biodiversity of the Laurel Watershed. Bring your friends and family for a day of adventure as we explore the flora and fauna of this beautiful watershed. Our team of expert biologists will guide you through various activities such as bird watching, plant, insect and mushroom identification. Don't miss this excellent opportunity to connect with nature and learn more about the importance of preserving our local ecosystems.

Burrito Bar lunch will be provided from Noon to 1pm

This event is free is attend.

Participants under 16 must be accompanied with an adult.

6am-& 7:30am, Owl Surveys with Mark Hopey

7:30 am-10:30am, Bird Indentification with Mark Hopey

9am-5pm, Plant Identification with Nathan Buchanan & Mary Kelly

10am-5pm, Mushroom Identification with Rodney Webb & David Jarjoura

10am-10:30am, Overview of fungi and their habitats, as well as go over collection and observation methods

10:30am-11:15am, Divide up into small groups and cover different areas of the LCC grounds collecting specimens

11:15 am-Noon, Return indoors to examine and ID the specimens we've found

1pm- 3pm, Venture to a more forested location to collect specimens, again dividing into small groups to cover more terrain

3pm- 5pm, Return to LCC for ID and recording of specimens; examine spore prints and possibly dehydrate and preserve any rare or unusual finds.

10am-5pm, Terrestrial Insect Identification with Jeremy Heath and John Stireman

10am-Noon, Introduction to insects and curation techniques, River Room

1-4pm, In the field and forest insect collection

4-5pm, In the lab butterfly curation

10am-5pm, Aqautic Insect Identification with Dave Penrose and Jason York

10:30am-2pm, JUNIOR BioBlitz with Heather Webb and Misty Varnell

12-1pm, BURRITO BAR LUNCH
