Whether you're an aspiring young scientist or a long-time science enthusiast, you're sure to enjoy a day at Columbia's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Participate in hands-on Earth science demonstrations, and learn from world-renowned researchers about their latest discoveries.

Schedule of the Day's Events

10:00 a.m. - Registration and Continental Breakfast at the Comer Geochemistry Building

  • Welcome remarks will begin at 10:15 a.m.

10:30 a.m. - Lecture from Doherty Senior Research Scientist, Robin Bell

11:30 a.m. - Demonstration Sessions (Choose two)

  • Core Repository Lab - The world's greatest collection of scientific samples from deep in the sea. The core samples are used for studying the earth's climate, plate tectonics, ocean biology and chemistry, and past environments

  • The Great Phytoplankton Race - Adults and kids get to make their own phytoplankton out of materials provided and view Phytoplankton through a microscope. The scientist will talk about what are phytoplankton and their importance in the ocean

  • Sounds of Seismology - Listen to the sounds of an earthquake

12: 45 p.m.- Closing Remarks and Brown Bag Lunch at the Comer Geochemistry Building

Lecture and demonstrations are suitable for children ages 10 and up.
