About this event

Help out at Lafayette Greens Garden! Please note: group sizes are limited to 15 volunteers per event.

Lafayette Greens is a green space and urban garden in the heart of downtown Detroit, next door to the famous Coney Islands and across the street from the fabulous Westin Book Cadillac Hotel. Visitors, city workers, and neighborhood residents enjoy and relax in the space,  watch veggies and flowers grow during the summer and enjoy seasonal programming. The award-winning garden, created by Kenneth Weikal Landscape Architecture, was donated to The Greening of Detroit by Compuware in 2014.

The Greening grows chemical-free fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers every year.   In 2019 we started focusing on pollinator habitat which is so rare in the city. We are a certified pollinator garden and focus on growing plants for butterflies, native and honey bees and birds. Our programming features classes on native bees, birds and pollinator plants. We also offer a series called DIG - Detroiters in the Garden - a community education program in partnership with Fort Street Presbyterian Church’s Open Door program. See more below.

Lafayette Greens is invaluable asset to the city of Detroit. This green space is a place of respite and solitude; a place where people reconnect with beauty and experience nature; a place of education and discovery. Stop in and see what we are up to.

The Greening of Detroit's mission is to provide sustainable growth of a healthy urban community through trees, greenspaces, education, training and job oppotunities.

34 years ago, we responded to Detroit's need to restore its urban forest through tree plantings. As the needs of the city changed and grew, we continued to respond with increasing Detroit's green infrastructure, and creating a workforce training program for adult residents with barriers to employment. We believe there is tremendous opportunity to create and inspire a new green paradigm for Detroit.
