LAECT Ham Basics 101

The Los Angeles Emergency Communications Team ("LAECT") is a group of dedicated individuals committed to training and education in all aspects of emergency preparedness, management and response, with an emphasis on emergency communications.LAECT partners with cities, community groups and other preparedness organizations to coordinate and provide practical preparedness and communications training throughout Southern California.Its members have received specialized training related to emergency preparedness, including Community Emergency Response Team ("CERT"), and the federal Incident Command System ("ICS") and National Incident Management System ("NIMS"), both used to manage response to disasters and emergency situation by all levels of government.  They also actively participate in numerous preparedness exercises each year, including the Great California Shake Out, the California Statewide Medical and Health Exercise and various local and regional exercises.FCC station license KA6ECT

Join us for a two-hour workshop for amateur radio beginners, improvers and those getting back into the hobby!
In this workshop you will learn

<LI>about amateur radios, basic operations and options</LI>
<LI>how to use amateur radios on simplex and repeater frequencies</LI>
<LI>how to make contact on simplex and repeaters</LI>
<LI>how to program your radios manually and using software</LI>
<LI>about different types of antennas</LI>
<LI>about power options and selections</LI>
<LI>about digital operations like Winlink, NBEMS and AREDN mesh</LI>
<LI>basic emergency communications operations</LI>
</UL>
This is a hands-on workshop, so if you already have a radio please bring it with you as we will have on-air exercises. We will focus on operating on VHF/UHF so any Technician level or higher operator can participate with ease.
