ABSTRACT:

Individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders are often prescribed psychotropic medication to treat behaviors such as aggression and self-injury. Unfortunately, many training programs in behavior analysis do not provide formal training on psychotropic medication despite the high likelihood of medication use by individuals with whom behavior analysts’ support. This presentation will provide an overview of commonly prescribed psychotropic medications and present suggestions for continued surveillance and assessment of psychotropic medication’s impact on behavior. By tracking specific dimensions of behavior, members of the care team are better prepared to provide support and work in partnership with prescribers. Attendees are encouraged to apply the content learned (e.g., identify adverse side effects to monitor, develop a plan to assess effects of psychotropic medication) to a case on their workload.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. Participants will be able to discuss how psychotropic medication effects can function as motivating operations and describe how therapeutic and adverse side effects of psychotropic medication can impact behavior.
2. Participants will be able to describe the need for continued analysis and assessment of behavior during psychotropic medication changes.
3. Participants will be able to identify measures one can collect to monitor psychotropic medication effects on behavior.

ABOUT LABA:

LABA is an organization dedicated to improving cultural, social and ethnic diversity in the field of applied behavior analysis as well as addressing the particular needs of diverse individuals and diverse communities. LABA was formed by three Latino behavior analysts, Ruth Tello-Di Leva, Isaac Bermudez and Jose D Rios, who, combined have worked in the field of behavior analysis for nearly 90 years.

LABA was the first behavior analytic organization formed specifically to address diversity (and the absence of diversity) in our field. LABA focuses on disseminating evidenced-based practices and providing support, resources, training opportunities, communication and networking opportunities to practitioners and students with the purpose of increasing the visibility, participation and collaboration of Latinos and other underrepresented groups in the leadership of behavior analytic organizations, educational institutions and behavior analytic agencies.
