Getting started in the lab as a creative can be daunting. Knowing how to grow microbes, keeping them free from contamination, and extracting the materials they make are key skills to master before embarking on novel projects. This class will teach you the basic techniques of how to work with colorful microbes and extract the pigments they produce.

In this workshop you will learn how to:

  • Make antibiotic stocks
  • Sterilize materials
  • Streak bacteria on plates
  • Grow bacteria in a liquid culture
  • Extract protein paint to make dye baths
  • Make microbial dye paintings
