The history of a pinup goes much further than the nose art on bomber planes and propaganda flyers of WW2... it is a point in history where women took control of their feminity, and were no longer afraid of hiding their curves behind long dresses and petticoats. In fact, in the 1800s, the use of a bicycle was all the rage and gave women the freedom to travel on their own, but the normal wardrobe with corsets and long skirts just wouldn't do, so the fashion changed to showing curves and a little more skin. As history progressed, so did the role of the pinup as they were used to sell war bonds and motivate troops overseas, but the modern day pinup is still just as relevant. The modern pinup embraces her unique body and it is her way of refusing the mental constructs of what a perfect figure should be and society's habitual body shaming. It is a beautiful thing when a woman can express confidence and joy with old school class... and that is what we hope to share with Kitsap and our community.
