Kitchen Confidential

For the past fifteen years,Porchlighthas been San Francisco's premier storytelling series. Each month, co-founders Beth Lisick and Arline Klatte invite six people from different backgrounds to tell ten-minute true stories without using notes or memorization. Past storytellers include some of the area's most entertaining school bus drivers, mushroom hunters, politicians, socialites, sex workers, musicians, authors, systems analysts, and social workers.

Karen Leibowitz is a writer and a restaurant person whose most recent project is The Perennial, an environmentally sustainable restaurant in SF where she is co-founder and Director of Communications. Last year, she co-wrote Atelier Crenn: The Metamorphosis of Taste with Chef Dominique Crenn. She's also a partner in Mission Chinese Food and Commonwealth and co-author of Mission Street Food: Recipes and Ideas from an Improbable Restaurant (McSweeney's, 2011). Her writing has been published by Food & Wine, The New York Times, Lucky Peach, Modern Farmer, Cherry Bombe, and other publications. 
Matt Levine is a San Francisco-based writer, natural & organic foods expert, and SF pedicab driver. His <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.naturalbusinessnews.com/" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">www.naturalbusinessnews.com</A> has been called Hunter S. Thompson on Pomegranate Juice. His writing can also be found at www.positive <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://lite.com/" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">lite.com.</A> His story, "How Not To Hire a Hooker", shared at a past Open Door, can be found in his upcoming book, The Semi-Comic Adventures of the Horny & Desperately Lonely Son with the Cancer Ridden Mom. He owns a lot of art, some of it with dogs, loves jazz and is available for freelance research, writing assignments and thrill-inducing (or not) pedicab rides. 
J. Kenji López-Alt is the Managing Culinary Director of Serious Eats, author of the James Beard Award-nominated New York Times best-seller The Food Lab: Better Home Cooking Through Science, and a columnist for Cooking Light. He lives in San Francisco with his wife Adriana and their two dogs. A New York native, Kenji cut his cooking chops the old-fashioned way by working his way up through the ranks of some of Boston's finest restaurants. With an education in science and engineering and as a former Senior Editor at Cook's Illustrated and America's Test Kitchen, Kenji is fascinated by the ways in which understanding the science of every day cooking can help improve even simple foods. His second book will be released in the fall of 2017.

 Following her undergraduate studies at Ithaca College, with a degree in sociology, Erika Almeida Mooney developed a keen interest in culinary arts. She enrolled in the French Culinary Institute in Manhattan, where she studied under the tutelage of renowned chefs, including Jacques Pepin, Jacques Torres and Andre Soltner.  While in school Erika was one of the first interns at the Food Network, working for Sara Multon and Emeril Lagasse.  Upon graduation Erika worked with a number of culinary and media stars including Bobby Flay and was on the opening crew of Babbo with Mario Batali where the restaurant won the coveted Best New Restaurant Award form the James Beard foundation.  .  After moving to San Francisco, she looked to different ways to be involved with the culinary world and began teaching and event planning.  She lives in San Francisco with her husband Richard and their daughter Daisy. Erika is the winery chef at her parents vineyard,  Lagniappe Peak and she can be found teaching classes at Sur La Table on Union Street.

With over 15 years of culinary experience, Richie Nakano has worked in some of San Francisco’s best kitchens, including Sushi Ran, Va De Vi, and Nopa.  In 2010, Nakano forged his own path and founded Hapa Ramen. One of the Bay Area’s early pioneers in the pop-up food scene, Hapa established a presence at the Ferry Building Farmers Market. Inspiration for the cuisine originates from Nakano’s half Japanese and half American heritage, his passion for obtaining the highest quality local ingredients, his constant pursuit of innovative culinary techniques.  In 2014, Nakano won the title of Prince of Porc at Cochon555 San Francisco, he was named “Next Generation of Kitchen Iconoclasts” by San Francisco magazine, dubbed a “local luminary” by the San Francisco Chronicle, awarded a Rising Star Chef honor by StarChefs, and nominated as one of the hottest chefs in San Francisco by SF Weekly readers. Hapa Ramen also won  “Best New Restaurant 2014” and “Best Ramen” in 7x7 magazine’s Eat + Drink Readers Choice awards, and his ramen was named to 7x7’s list of “100 Things to Eat Before You Die.”
 Originally from San Francisco, Kyle Mizono is one of the last international Beanie Baby collectors and a comedian. Along with being a face frequently seen in the San Francisco and Los Angeles comedy scenes, her festival performances include SF Sketchfest, Portland’s Bridgetown Comedy Festival and Riot LA. Kyle also performed at The Funny or Die Hideout during SXSW. She’s also been involved with such nationally and internationally traveled shows as <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.superseriousshow.com/" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">THE SUPER SERIOUS SHOW</A> and HOT TUB WITH KURT AND KRISTEN.
