Kimekomi Workshop

IAMA was conceived as a permanent museum dedicated to displaying artworks made by talented artists from all over the world. Proudly a part of San Francisco's downtown community, the International Art Museum of America (IAMA) is a nonprofit art museum that strives to provide a global lens for people to appreciate art and culture by unveiling the hidden bonds among seemingly disparate worlds. IAMA works continuously to collect diverse artworks to expand their collection, thus promoting harmony and peace among people.

Learn the traditional Asian art of Kimekomi

IAMA is happy to welcome artist and instructor Jenni Barry for a one of a kind Kimekomi Workshop, in celebration of AAPI Heritage Month. Kimekomi is a Japanese art form where fabric pieces are tucked into a base. In this introductory class, students will be creating 2-D Kimekomi art that combines the painterly quality of impressionism, with complex quilting. We will begin by drawing a ‘stained-glass’ style design on foam-core. We cover basic cutting techniques for the foam, then cutting and tucking techniques for the fabric. I encourage students to bring their favorite fabrics to use. About the Artist: Jenni Barry was raised in a small community within the apricot orchards of the South San Francisco Bay area, before it became known as Silicon Valley. She attended Sierra Nevada College, where she received her Bachelor&#x27;s of Fine Arts with a concentration in painting in 1995. She struggled to find her way as a painter in an art world that was rapidly converting to a digital platform she was never trained for. Jenni had two children and moved from Northern California to Northern Idaho. For the longest time, she felt invisible, as a painter in a sea of painters. However, the culmination of her life’s events was the catalyst for her to adopt/re-invent Kimekomi, an art form that honors the memories through fabric.
