About this event

  • 3 hours

Killing PowerPoint is an interactive workshop that will transform your presentations and revolutionize the way you approach visual storytelling and data visualization. Remove PowerPoint, Keynote, and Google Slides from your toolkit once and for all, and start building compelling webpage presentations.

The bulk of the event will be for hands-on designing. Each participant will get help with their presentation within their specific context.

Benefits of Webpage Presentations

  1. Functionality & Creativity
There is no functionality lost in the transition towards webpage presentations. You can do everything you can do with PowerPoint, and so much more, increasing the amount of creative opportunities.
  2. Digital Marketing
Webpage presentations market themselves. Optimized for search and ready to share to social media, webpage presentations boost your domain authority and sharability. You and your content will be more visible online.
  3. Dynamic Content
Make updates as needed, fix errors, and keep your content up to date. You presentation should move with you at the pace of real life.

Agenda

This workshop helps participants design a new presentation or improve an existing slide deck, and it gives specific directions for development and presentation. The Design phase is covered in detail, but all three phases are addressed: Design, Develop & Present

  1. Intro to the Concept
Learn exactly why slide decks are outdated and understand why it’s time for a switch to webpage presentations. You will never look at slide decks the same way again!
  2. Strategize and Plan
Properly prepare to present, design, and develop. Learn how to setup your webpage presentation for different venues, event formats, and content types.
  3. Narrative Storytelling
Hop into a pageless document to start crafting your narrative in an outline.
  4. Visual Design
Source for images, video, and other graphic assets to include, and establish a style guide to maintain a nice aesthetic.
  5. Intro to Development
Get direction for developing your webpage design, including no-code and low-tech options. Learn how to maintain your webpage for continued high-performance.

Hands-On Creation:

Participants will begin crafting their presentations in a Google Doc using the pagelss format. In the Doc, during the workshop you will write up development notes for you to build your presentations using platforms like WordPress, Squarespace, Google Docs, or graphic design software such as Figma, Adobe, and Illustrator.

The Original Death to Slide Decks (2023):

If you caught Death to Slide Decks last year, you’re in for a treat – this workshop kicks off with Version 2, an improved version of the webpage presentation, refined through Win’s extensive experiences at over a dozen events.

Death to Slide Decks: Why your next presentation needs to be a webpage

Description:
Slide decks, slideshows, and PowerPoints are tied to a time when content was static and contained in finite pages. We navigated through content by moving from slide to slide, page to page. We had to turn the page or hit ‘next. But now we have websites and digital media. So not only has content evolved drastically, but so has the way that we can interact with this content on a screen. Webpage presentations fit in with today’s visual culture. Today we can present content in a way that matches how we naturally view and experience the world.

This presentation has three parts: when, why, and how. We’ll look at the history of visual storytelling to understand why it’s time for a change. Then, I’ll discuss how to build webpage presentations using page builders, WordPress and other tools.
