Keene, NH: A Deep Local History with Matthew Myer Bolton

Matthew Myer Bolton will be the featured speaker at the Historical Society of Cheshire County Annual Meeting on Monday, April 29, 2024, at 7:00 pm. Following a brief business meeting, Matthew will speak on the topic of “Keene, NH: A Deep Local History.” Matthew describes his presentation as “an exploration of the "big picture history" of both Keene and the Monadnock region more generally, with special emphasis on natural history (landscape, flora, and fauna), human history (from Abenaki settlements to present), and literary/artistic history (including Thoreau, Thayer, Twain, and Cather). As William Faulkner once put it, ‘The past is never dead. It's not even past.’

Matthew Myer Boulton is a writer and filmmaker based in Keene, New Hampshire. He has served on the faculty of Harvard Divinity School and seminaries in New England and the Midwest. SALT Project, the Emmy-winning production company he runs with his wife, Elizabeth Myer, has made films about Jennie Powers, nighttime bird migration, the art history of the White Mountains, and New England hydropower.
