TheForeign Policy Institute(FPI) of The Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) seeks to advance practically oriented research and discussion about foreign policy. To this end, it organizes research initiatives and study groups, and hosts leaders from around the world as resident or non-resident fellows in fields including international policy, business, journalism, and academia.The Big Pictureis a forum that explores international affairs through arts and culture.We host art and photography exhibits and cultural experiences alongside policy-relevant conversations on global issues.The forum is housed at the Johns Hopkins SAISForeign Policy Institute(FPI), which seeks to advance practically oriented research and discussion about foreign policy. All of our engagements bring different communities into conversation with one another. We are guided by the idea that better policy will result from engaging in interdisciplinary conversations across many sectors.

Karachi Kid: An exhibition and discussion of the socioeconomic challenges﻿ surrounding adoption in Pakistan with Photographer Kashif Javaid

SAIS Foreign Policy Institute, SAIS Asia Programs &amp; The American Pakistan Foundation invite you to The Karachi Kid Exhibition. Photographer Kashif Javaid traveled to Karachi, Pakistan to document the experiences of children, healthcare workers, and families involved in the adoption process in Pakistan. Compelled by their own personal experience of becoming parents through adoption, Javaid and his wife Faiza want to foster open and honest conversations on the traditionally taboo subject of adoption. Issues of poverty, censorship, women&#x27;s rights, and infanticide all shape how and why adoption has become a taboo subject in Pakistani culture.Javaid will present his work and discuss the project&#x27;s focus. The presentation will be followed by a discussion with the audience and a small reception where guests can view some of Javaid&#x27;s work.Exhibition Opens5:30 - 6:00 pmDiscussion6:00 - 7:00 pmReception7:00 - 7:30 pmArtist StatementFrom Faiza and Kashif Javaid, the parents of Haris: The photo project “Karachi Kid” expresses our gratitude towards the miracle of adoption. We became parents through adoption and the process changed us, made us humble human beings as well as curious for the biological parents. As a mother, I am very very thankful to the soul who gave me the most precious gift of my life. For Kashif, it simply made him more curious over the passage of time. As a boy, he spent his childhood playing on the streets. Observing and interacting with homeless and orphan kids on the street was a regular thing for him. In August 2019, Kashif went back to Karachi, Pakistan to spend time with kids at orphanages and on the street- and to find answers to what makes women put their kids for adoption. His curiosity demanded answers for what are the reasons behind this painful decision of giving away a piece of their heart and body away. What is it that prevents a mother from being a mother? What happens to older kids who don’t get adopted? Why infanticide occurs and is overlooked? Is it poverty, illiteracy, male dominance, religion or culture that demands this sacrifice from mothers in a society? And what happens to the sacrificed abandoned kids?
