Asking for money is scary.  In this two-part practicum, you will learn how to do it, and you will try it out!

Get over your fear of meeting a donor and asking for a donation. Trust us - it&#x27;s a lot more practical and effective than just writing a grant! Please note: The date listed here, November 15, 8:30 - 11:30 is only part 1. Part 2 will be held a week later from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. You will have to attend both dates.Part 1 - Learn how to tell your story. What makes a good presentation? How can you turn your mission and your impact into a very brief story? What tools can you use to draw the listener in? Once you have tried this out on your fellow participants, learn how to turn that into a well structured two-person ask. At the end of the session you will be put into teams of 2 or 3 (depending on how many participants we have) and given assignments. The following week you will be talking with real, live donors and making mock asks. Between Parts 1 and 2 you will research and prepare yourself. Part 2 - Make the ask. In the morning, you will work with your team mates to structure the asks that you will be making. Don&#x27;t be scared: the donors know in advance that this is all a safe space and the asks are not for real. After lunch you will be making approximately 3 asks. You will have only 15 minutes or so, and you will get feedback on how you did from the donors.We will end the day with a panel discussion on the state of philanthropy and trends the donors see.This is a very intense but fun practicum. Nothing like any other workshop you have ever taken.

The facilitator is Rob Meiksins of the Nonprofit Academy. He has been involved in the nonprofit sector and helping people raise funds for more than 20 years. He has taught workshops for the Nonprofit Center, UW-Parkside, BoardStar, UW_Continuing Education, and more. The donors you will be meeting will remain a secret until the end of day 1.
