K-12 experiential learning about landscape using geospatial STEM tools

The focus of this webinar is to help professional GIS departments engage with children and teach geospatial technology.

<p>During the 2019-2020 school year, we worked with seventh grade social studies students in Comstock Middle School in southwest Michigan (near Kalamazoo). Students engaged in a variety of activities to improve their map reading and landscape visualization skills. We used techniques such as contour boxes to help students understand how contour maps are made and how a contour map represents the landscape, as well as Play-doh and LEGOs to assist students with “seeing” how a 2-D landscapes translates into a 3-D model. Students had the opportunity to build a small LEGO drone, fly a larger drone and see how a much larger, research-oriented drone works and collects data. They were also exposed to the digital 3-D representation of the drone-collected data from a nearby park that students are familiar with. The end goal of this project was for students to work on an environmental problem at the nearby park using their newfound and honed geospatial skills and present their findings to the community, however, COVID-19 cut this year-long project short so this last portion did not occur. We did collect data throughout the program to gauge student improvement throughout the program. We will walk the audience through our program, showing student work and engagement, as well as report on our assessment finding.</p><p>This webinar features professors Dr. Lisa DeChano-Cook and Dr. Adam Mathews from the Geography Department at Western Michigan University. </p>
