About this event

Junior Loon Biologist

Hey there, future loon experts! Join us for a fun-filled day on Cross Lake to learn all about these fascinating birds. Our Junior Loon Biologist event will include hands-on activities, educational sessions, and a chance to observe loons in their natural habitat. Get ready to dive into the world of loons and discover what makes them such unique creatures. Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity to become a junior loon biologist!

The National Loon Center and Crosslake Community Center have partnered to bring to Crosslake the Junior Loon Biologist program! This program aims to showcase to our community’s youth what a day in the life of a biologist would look like, coll ecting real data on Common Loons (Gavia immer) on the Whitefish Chain to aid in conservation efforts.

This program is uniquely focused on kids ages 7-12 and their experiences on the water. Members of the public on these excursions would be a vital part of sharing their observations and be provided with binoculars, a shared GPS unit, and datasheets for data collection. Participants will take water clarity measurements on the surveys using a Secchi disk and will have the opportunity to view underwater aquatic life using an Aqua-Vu camera.

Drop off and pick up location will be at the entrance of the Army Corps Campground, where one of our staff members will be waiting to meet you and walk over to the StewardShip. Drop off is at 9:00am and pick up is at 11:00am.

*A parent is welcome to join if desired, but is not required. Space is limited on the NLC boat, if parent is accompanying, they must register along with child. Kids will be walked to and from the StewardShip by the Community Center and National Loon Center staff.
