Juneteenth is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced that the Civil War had ended and all enslaved individuals were free. Juneteenth is observed with community gatherings, parades, picnics, and other events that honor African American history and culture. It is recognized as a state holiday in many states and is gaining national recognition as a day of reflection and celebration of freedom.
