Join us for a hands-on quilting class where creativity meets history! In this special workshop, community members will craft Underground Railroad quilt blocks, each rich with symbolism and storytelling. These blocks will be carefully assembled into a collective quilt—a tribute to resilience, heritage, and artistry—and donated to the Lincoln Theater. Whether you're an experienced quilter or picking up a needle for the first time, this class welcomes all skill levels. Participants will learn the significance of traditional Underground Railroad quilt patterns while working together to create a masterpiece that reflects unity and remembrance.

Stitching History: A Community Quilt Workshop 

Richard “Duarte” Brown is a master artist with the TRANSIT ARTS Youth Program and the Ohio Alliance for the Arts Education's Art in the house program. For more than 20 years, Brown has dedicated his talent to helping young people in Columbus through countless programs including CAPACITY (CAPA’s Youth Art Program), the Short Stop Youth Center, the King Arts Complex, Ohio Alliance for Arts Education’s (and formerly GCAC’s) Artists-in-Schools program, GCAC’s Children of the Future, Ebony Boys, Art Safe and VSA Ohio. Brown has also worked as a high school art instructor at the Arts

and College Preparatory Academy in Columbus. His murals can be seen throughout the city bringing comfort and inspiration to countless viewers.

Scavenger Hunt


Gimp – A gimp, also called a gymp or boondoggle, is a lacing stitch used to make bracelets, keychains, pulleys, and even bookmarks. It's a wonderful stitch to know, and useful for a variety of applications, and is the cornerstone of all "boondoggle" stitches.

Thiossane  West African Dance Institute is a Columbus-based organization dedicated to preserving and presenting traditional West African dance, music, and culture through authentic performances and detailed instruction. Their mission is to introduce, increase, and enhance cultural awareness to better understand and appreciate the richness of the African Diaspora.  ￼

In this workshop with Thiossane, you will learn to perform traditional West African dances, understand the cultural significance behind each movement, and experience the rhythms of live drumming. The session offers an immersive introduction to the expressive power of African dance, fostering a deeper connection to its rich heritage.
