Announces Juneteenth Jubilee 2024

The Columbus branch of the NAACP welcomes everyone to the 2024 Juneteenth Jubilee celebration, this year with the theme “Healing Our Soul.” Multiple events beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 22, will tell the story of the resilience of the Black community and how food, music, art and movement have connected to help heal suffering over centuries of enslavement.
This year’s headline events will be talks by culinary historian and cookbook author Michael Twitty, panels to discuss mental health and why history matters, and two bus tours of Black history locations in Columbus to be led by The Republic’s Woman of the Year, Paulette Roberts.
A kid zone and health corner will be available, as well as food vendors, merchandise booths, music and fun. Traditional red food to celebrate the occasion will also be offered at the NAACP booth.
The closing ceremony will include a Major General Granger reenactment, singing and a community dance.
Juneteenth, June 19, is now a federal holiday that commemorates and celebrates the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston to announce that the 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed by President Abraham Lincoln.
