About this event

  • 3 hours

Celebrate this important holiday marking the end of slavery by delving deep into Black history at Green-Wood!

Participate in free kids’ art activities in our Historic Chapel and take a self-guided tour of the gravesites of fascinating Black historical figures. Maps and biographies of featured burial sites will be available when you enter the Cemetery, and our trolley will run on a loop to all sites so folks can hop on and off as they please. If you’ve attended in previous years—come again! This year we’ll be highlighting several new historical figures.

For this event, please enter the Cemetery throughout Main Entrance at 500 25th Street and make your way to our Historic Chapel. Craft activities and tour materials can be found there.

Free. Registration is recommended, but not required. Please consider a donation to the Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year.

Before Registering, Please Note:

  • Location: This program’s “home base” will be Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel, located near our Main Entrance at 500 25th st. Enter the cemetery there, walk up through our Gothic Arch and security and other cemetery staff will help direct you to the chapel.
  • Please keep your distance from others while checking in, and follow instructions from Cemetery staff.
  • Your safety is important! This tour includes climbing stairs and walking on grassy and uneven terrain. We strongly encourage attendees to wear suitable footwear.
  • Feeling Sick? Stay home if you are feeling sick or running a fever.
  • Attendees must follow ALL instructions and guidance from Cemetery staff and ambassadors.
  • There are no paper or e-tickets, and registrants do not have to check in. Registration is helpful to give us an idea of participant numbers so that we may have enough materials on hand.
  • Inclement weather policy: We will monitor the weather in advance and will make every effort to proceed with the program. If bad weather is expected, we will not make a final decision regarding the run of the event until 8 am the day of the program. Registered attendees will be notified by email in case of cancellation or adjusted hours. There is no rain date for this program.
