Join us for an exciting culinary workshop tailored for youth ages 8-16, where we'll delve into the symbolism of red foods in the celebration of Juneteenth, a day commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Through hands-on cooking activities and engaging discussions, participants will learn about the history and significance of red foods in African American culture and how they reflect themes of resilience, empowerment, and cultural identity.

During this interactive workshop, participants will:

Make Red Beans and Rice: Discover the cultural significance of red beans and rice in African American cuisine. Learn how African agricultural practices and culinary traditions influenced the development of this iconic dish and contributed to the wealth of the Americas. Participate in a cooking demonstration to prepare a vegetarian version of red beans and rice and discuss how food can be a vehicle for cultural exchange.

Strawberry Soda Making: Explore the symbolism of strawberries and its American roots. Learn how Strawberry soda became a drink associated with rebellion and empowerment in African American history. Make homemade strawberry soda using fresh ingredients and discuss the role of food and drink in social movements and cultural resistance.

Watermelon Cutting: Engage in a conversation about the complex history of watermelon as both a symbol of success and a racist stereotype. Learn how stereotypes are generated and perpetuated. Discuss strategies for challenging stereotypes and reclaiming cultural identity and power. Participate in a hands-on activity to cut and enjoy fresh watermelon together.

Community Meal: Come together to share in a delicious meal made with love and collaboration. Enjoy the fruits of your labor as we dine together and celebrate the spirit of community and unity.

Each participant should bring one adult guardian. Guardians are invited to observe and participate in the eating of the meal, fostering intergenerational connections and meaningful conversations about history, culture, and identity.
