About this event

Every month community folks gather at the magical Green Farmacy Garden to harvest, create, and discuss herbal remedies together. Every month community folks gather at the magical Green Farmacy Garden to harvest, create, and discuss herbal remedies together. Come spend time in the garden oasis embarking on an herb journey of discoveries & connections as we make relations with the plants, & of course plant-y folks in our community.

Herbal Tisanes, Tinctures, Elixirs, Salves, Infused Oils and Vinegars... you've heard them all, but when is a particular preparation favored? What are their benefits? And which herbs are best suited for each preparation?

Join us in the garden as we learn about the herbs in season best suited to infuse into oils & vinegars, as well as a special sweet treat.

We'll meet at the patio picinc table for fresh tisane (herbal tea) & introductions at 11am. Then we'll wander into the garden to meet the plants in season and discuss identification & growing tips, medicinal & nutritional components, and best harvesting & preparation practices. We'll harvest herbs together to create our herbal remedies.

Bring a notebook & writing utensils if you use them. If you have a harvest basket or bag, and small garden shears or scissors, bring those as well.

Lastly & most importantly, bring jars to take home your herbal remedy samples. The increase in ticket price this month accounts for oil, vinegar, & vodka provided to infuse garden herbs. Participants will go home with 3 remedies 1* oil with herb of choice for infusing, 2* Infused vinegar with herb of choice, 3* Sweet surprise tincture (vodka)

Some herbs in season available to harvest are:

Horsetail, Equisetum arvense

Nettle, Urtica dioica

Oregano, Origanum vulgare

Sage, Salvia officinalis

Rosemary, Rosmarinus officinale

Summer Savory, Satureja hortensis

Cronewort, Artemisia vulgaris, mugwort

Comfrey, Sympythum officinale

Lemon Balm, Melissa offinalis

Spearmint & Peppermint

Sweet woodruff, Galium odoratum

Organized by

Founded by USDA botanist James A. Duke and his wife Peggy in 1997, The Green Farmacy Garden (GFG) is now owned and operated by the Community Ecology Institute (CEI). Located in Fulton, MD, GFG is a sanctuary for approximately 300 native and non-native species of plants that have been used traditionally and/or researched for medicinal applications. The Dukes collected medicinal plants for over sixty years, and in 1997, they transformed part of their pasture land into a teaching garden. Organized in plots that echo chapters of Jim’s book, The Green Pharmacy, the Garden highlights medicinal plants of global herbal traditions.

The Green Farmacy Garden is also a part of the United Plant Savers network of sanctuaries around the country, which strive to educate the public and maintain native plant species that have become at risk or endangered.

The garden and grounds are accessible to the public only by event registration or private appointment. Please visit our website for full details on volunteering.
