Talk one - Design Power-Up: Introduction to Statistics for Designers
 
In this talk, we’ll go through the basics of how to use statistics to power-up the design of your product or service to the next level. We’ll first present some of the basics terms and definitions to provide an understanding of basic statistical concepts, after which we discuss how these concepts relate to measuring usability and user experience. Finally, we’ll also examine how you can use different scales in conjunction with web analytics to be able to make well-informed design decisions.

Mohit
Till recently Mohit worked at the Design Research Lab with his focus on connected communities. He loves to work on projects that transcend the digital medium and are able to shape people’s behavior for good. Mohit is always up for interesting conversations. Apart from the deep question of “What is Design?” you can talk to him about Squash, Pink Floyd or Food.
 
Mikko
Mikko is an interaction designer interested in how technology changes people’s lives and how multimodal and mindful technologies can help in creating a more balanced relationship between people and technology. Mikko works for Futurice, a lean service creation company. Outside of work you may find him doing his favorite sports or looking for something interesting, such as the best burgers in town.
 

Talk two: The importance of non-verbal communication when designing a product I came to Berlin two years ago after spending my entire life in New York City. Navigating a new culture and a language barrier has made me more reliant than ever on visual cues. Learning another language has affected my perspective on what makes the design of a product effective. In this talk I will explore accessibility design, the importance of non-verbal communication when designing a product, and how these affect all of us on a daily basis. I will also discuss the dichotomy of the universal versus the individual: is it more important to stick with existing paradigms that are understood practically by all people around the world, or to ditch them in favour of the unique, experimental and memorable? The talk will also briefly touch on the parallels between design and language as systems. Speaker - Ariel Cotton Ariel Cotton is an interdisciplinary comics artist, UI/UX designer, and maker of things. Her work straddles the boundaries between art, design and technology: one day she will be making chocolate orgasm and dresses scream, the next she will be designing products that make the world easier for users to navigate, the next she will be making comic zines about life in New York, Berlin, and everything in between.
