The Museums of Western Colorado presents our 2024 Trips and Tours Program!

Join our expert paleontologists as we raft the black water (calm water) of the Colorado River to experience canyon geology up close. You will discover the wonder of the geologic history of western Colorado from inside the magnificent Ruby & Horsethief Canyons. Bring your shoes that will not fall off, a water bottle, wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen and bug spray. Swim or quick dry attire is encouraged. Lunch is included!

The minimum age for this event is 6 years old. All guests 16 and under must be accompanied by a paying adult. All participants must also complete and return a medical waiver before participating in our Trips and Tours Programs.

Difficulty: No hiking is required on this expedition, but participants should expect to be outside for a full day, in the heat and bugs on the water.

What to Bring: Bring your shoes that will not fall off, a water bottle, wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen and bug spray. Swim or quick dry attire is encouraged.

Please note that lunches are included with our Full-Day Rafting excursion. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email with a link to fill out your preferred lunch order, note any food allergies, etc.

Frequently asked questions

My child wants to go but I don't. What can I do?

We require everyone age 16 and under to have a guardian and responsible adult attending. Everyone who goes on the excursion must pay our program fee.

Does the full-day rafting trip include a lunch?

Yes, all full-day excursions and full-day digs have a lunch included, and you will be able to specify allergies in the paperwork emailed to you after registration.

I see there is only one spot left. Can you fit my family of three into the full-day excursion?

No. You can register 1 member of your family and then sign up the additional members on the waitlist and hope for a cancellation! In the event there isn’t a cancellation though, we will only refund your registration fee 80%. Sorry! The waitlist is only activated once the event is completely full.

How strenuous is this full-day excursion?

Be ready! Participants should expect to be outside for a full day, in the heat and bugs on the water.

Can we visit the museum after our excursion?

The timeline of this excursion is from 7:45am to 5:30pm. Museum hours are from 10:00am to 5:00pm, so unfortunately you will not be able to visit the museum after this excursion.

Are there digs year-round?

We only offer our dinosaur digs program in the summertime due to staff availability and seasonal weather conditions. In 2024, our dig season has been extended, and we will be operating from June through September!
