About this event

  • 3 hours

Come see stage readings of two original plays with authors in attendance. The Julian Playwright Festival competition is open to all playwrights residing in the following San Diego County East County communities: Alpine, Borrego Springs, El Cajon, Jamul, Julian, La Mesa, Lakeside, Lemon Grove, Ramona, Santee, and Spring Valley. We welcomed plays that are unpublished and unproduced by a professional company.

Two scripts will be selected as finalists by industry professionals. Each will be given a staged reading performance in front of a panel of judges and the public. Feedback from the audience will be encouraged immediately following the staged readings during a ‘talk back’ session with the audience, author, director and actors.

Sets, costumes and props will be kept to a minimum to showcase the writers' work. The opportunity for a staged production allows the playwright to experience the full collaborative process, joining with a director, actors, and production staff in building a play from page to stage.

Our Why: We’re a nonprofit association skilled at producing shows, raising money and building community. The East County region of San Diego has a small number of theater producers, and a large number of artists, theatergoers and patrons. ECPAA helps producers by promoting the entire regional theatrical arts scene and bringing together a community of patrons eager to offer financial support to the entire region’s benefit.

Our What: Our patron development and fundraising programs raise money throughout the year. ECPAA both produces shows and shares fundraising proceeds among member producers through fund distribution, as well as start-up grants to emerging companies.
