About Lane Evans
The forum is honoring the legacy and leadership of the late Congressman Lane Evans (D-I7 IL) whose career was marked by an uncompromising commitment to working families and veterans.
Lane's career representing the 17th Congressional District of Illinois from 1983-2007, offers an example of authentic progressive populist leadership grounded in people-oriented, inclusive values that won support from voters across the political spectrum. Lane was the first Democrat to be re-elected in the 17th Congressional District of Illinois since the Civil War. He was elected to 12 terms in Congress in what was then one of the most conservative districts in the country, while never compromising the principles and values of standing up for people.. He did so while having the most progressive anti-Reagan voting record of any member of Congress during that era.
Lane's legacy of "big tent populism" stands as a strong antidote to today's politics of division. During this challenging moment in our political history, we look to the example of leaders like Lane who appealed to a broad spectrum of voters with an unquestionable commitment to those who are too often underrepreaented or left behind.
We look forward to seeing you on October 19th.
As Lane would say, "Don't Mourn, Organize!"
