  • easy to navigate

  • expertly designed route
  • points of interest included along the way
  • very sensible options for both long and short distance riders

In Jeffersonville, Indiana there is about 18 miles of bikeway - partly the Ohio River Bikeway, partly the Discovery Trail, and partly the Big Four Bridge. The bikeway diversity of Jeffersonville is short and sweet. The city is rich in Ohio River history and the bikeways play a creative role linking its historical, geological, and cultural markers. This tour ties together each of these markers into a

  • comfortable one-day 17-mile bikeway loop in Jeffersonville
  • scenic 20-mile Lewis and Clark Bridge loop
  • two-day extended 36-mile adventure with an overnight stay in Jeffersonville

The two separate tour loops - Jeffersonville loop, Lewis and Clark Bridge loop - hit the major area markers including

  • the Falls of the Ohio
  • the historical Big Four Bridge connecting Jeffersonville to Louisville over the Ohio River
  • the Interpretive Center at the Falls of the Ohio State Park, commemorating the first meeting spot of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition
  • the Howard National Steamboat Museum, housed in a 22-room mansion built in 1890
  • the Lewis & Clark Bridge, a massive cable suspension bridge over the Ohio River with a 17-foot wide pedestrian multi-use bikeway
  • the Culbertson Mansion, a 25-room Second Empire-style mansion built in 1869

The 17-mile Jeffersonville loop is 83% bikeway. The 20-mile Lewis and Clark Bridge loop is 47% bikeway. This tour in Jeffersonville is a great quiet place to launch into many of Louisville's attractions just across the Big Four Bridge. All of the routes come with CycleNuts' 50% downhill guarantee and are a mix of asphalt bikeways, bike lanes, sharrows, and roadways. The segments that are not bikeway are Google bicycle-approved roadways when possible. If you are more comfortable using sidewalks in these areas, then you will find some of the roadway segments have sidewalks along the way. "Bicyclists may (but are not required to) utilize any usable bicycle lane. Bicycles are not prohibited from being ridden on the sidewalks but bicyclists should check their local ordinances for variations." source: Indiana bicycle laws. "Sidewalk riding is generally permitted but bicyclists must slow down to walking speed when pedestrians are present or expected, yield to pedestrians on sidewalks and crosswalks." source: Kentucky bicycle laws

The routes follow the lay-of-the-land along the Ohio River, which is relatively level. There are segments along the way where you may use your deepest bike gear, e-bike muscle, or be bike-hiking (no shame in that - it is a pro tactic often used to save the legs/energy reserves). Sweating is optional, but probably unavoidable - the Ohio River valley sets the humidity level in this region.

This is a perfect weekend destination adventure! If doing the tour as an overnight 2-day adventure, the overnight stay hotel suggestion in the route directions is CycleNuts approved based on zero-bedbug complaints. The cost of the overnight stay is not included in the tour ticket. Easily, with the Smart-guide, you can wander away from the planned route to explore areas and points of interest that you find along the way. The Smart-guide will get you back on the route when you are ready.

Jeff has things to see!

Jeffersonville (aka Jeff) - named in 1801 after President Thomas Jefferson - is a historical riverside city that has an impressive points-of-interest list:

  • The Falls of Ohio - Yes, the Ohio River did have one waterfall along its entire length, but it was flooded over in the 19th century with dams. Now the area is designated as an Indiana State Park and National Wildlife Conservation Area with 386-million-year old fossils.
  • The Ohio River shoreline – just north of Jeffersonville, the Ohio River is at its widest point of one mile.
  • Big Four Bridge - built as a mile long railroad bridge over the Ohio River in1895, it was decommissioned in the '60s and reopened as a pedestrian bridge in 2013 as part of the Louisville Waterfront Park and the Big Four Station Park in Jeffersonville.
  • The Interpretive Center at the Falls of the Ohio State Park - commemorating the first meeting spot of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition.
  • The Howard National Steamboat Museum - housed in a 22-room mansion built in 1890.
  • The Lewis & Clark Bridge - a massive cable suspension bridge over the Ohio River with a 17-foot wide pedestrian multi-use bikeway.
  • The Culbertson Mansion - a 25-room Second Empire-style mansion built in 1869.

Just across the river is Louisville – Kentucky’s largest city chock full of things to see and do!

  • Belle of Louisville – all aboard for a 2-hour river cruise! Built in 1914, the Belle is the only remaining authentic steamboat from the great American packet boat era.
  • Churchill Downs – famed for hosting the annual Kentucky Derby. Come see a race or just tour the historical Grandstands.
  • Kentucky Derby Museum – if you love American Thoroughbred horse racing then you do not want to miss this opportunity to tour this museum.
  • Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory - home of the World's Biggest Baseball Bat. Tour the actual factory where world-famous Louisville Slugger bats are made.
  • Muhammad Ali’s Childhood Home - “It's not just a house, it's an educational experience”.
  • Muhammad Ali Cultural Center & Museum - three levels of award-winning exhibits and celebrating Muhammad Ali’s legendary life.
  • Louisville Mega Cavern - former limestone quarry now housing a zip line & tram, ropes course, underground bike park & events.
  • The Kentucky Bourbon Trail® - Kentucky's legendary distilleries have crafted the world's finest Bourbons for more than 200 years, and there is a trail of distilleries to explore. Louisville is the only city in the world with more than 10 distillery experiences.
