About this event

  • 3 hours

Composer/pianist Vijay Iyer, one of the leading music makers of his generation, comes to the JazzFest White Plains with his acclaimed trio, featuring Linda May Han Oh (bass) and Tyshawn Sorey (drums). Praised by NPR as “truly astonishing” and by the New York Times as “the great new jazz piano trio” the ensemble makes emotionally resonant music that is rooted in tradition yet steeped in innovation.

Composer-pianist Vijay Iyer has carved out a unique path as an influential, shape-shifting presence in 21st-century music. His deeply interactive, powerfully expressive musical language is indebted to the composer-pianist lineage from Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk to Alice Coltrane and Geri Allen, the creative music movement of the ‘’60s and 70s, and rhythmic traditions of South Asia and West Africa. He has released twenty-six widely praised albums and has received countless accolades, including Grammy Award nominations, a MacArthur Fellowship and more.

Grammy Award-winning bassist/composer Linda May Han Oh, who is Malaysian-born, Western Australian-raised and NYC-based, has performed and recorded with artists such as Pat Metheny, Kenny Barron, Joe Lovano and Vijay Iyer. She was voted Bassist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association (2018-2021), Hot House Magazine (2019) and JazzTimes (2022) and received the Herb Albert Award in the Arts in 2023. Oh was featured in the Pixar movie Soul under the musical direction of Jon Batiste and alongside drummer Roy Haynes. She is Associate Professor at the Berklee College of Music and is part of the Institute for Jazz and Gender Justice led by Terri Lyne Carrington.

Newark-born composer and multi-instrumentalist Tyshawn Sorey is celebrated for his incomparable virtuosity, effortless mastery and memorization of highly complex scores, as well as an extraordinary ability to blend composition and improvisation in his work. The New Yorker recently noted that Sorey is “among the most formidable denizens of the in-between zone…An extraordinary talent who can see across the entire musical landscape.” He has performed nationally and internationally with his own ensembles, in addition to artists John Zorn, Vijay Iyer, Aaron Diehl, Roscoe Mitchell, Wadada Leo Smith, Claire Chase, and Jason Moran, among many others. Sorey has released twelve critically acclaimed recordings that feature his work as a composer, co-composer, improviser, multi-instrumentalist and conceptualist.
