About Music at Lincoln High School and the Onward Ensemble:

The Onward Ensemble is the next phase of a dream that builds on the intergenerational talents of current and alumni Lincoln High performers while encouraging a love of music and the life skills needed to sustain a thriving creative life while also benefitting the community by providing entertainment and a creative and learning environment for its’ residents, young and old.

The Onward Ensemble draws on the musical styles that reflect The District and its’ members, including Jazz, Soul, Latin and Polynesian influences. The Onward Ensembles goal is to represent the Lincoln District and the people who have been shaped and influenced by its’ rich history of cultures, flavors and personalities that have been and continue to be vital threads of the fabric that make up our beloved city, Tacoma, WA.

About Onward Ensemble's Director William Dummitt:

The son of a career Army Nebraskan father and South Tacoma raised mother, William was born while his family was stationed in Munich, West Germany. A Lincoln District resident and a product of the Tacoma Public School system, he is a proud alum of Seward Elementary, Stewart Junior High and Lincoln High Schools. Including his mother and siblings, William is the seventh in his family to graduate from Lincoln High School, not counting numerous aunts, uncles and cousins who are Abes.

He studied saxophone with Harry Blanchard and Michael Davenport and played lead Alto in the PLU Jazz Ensemble, led by Roger Gard. William has performed with a diverse range of musicians, including Reggie Watts, Dan Gailey, Geoff Harper, Lamar Lofton, Preston Singletary and Alan Goodman.

His dream of reconnecting with Lincoln and paying forward the gratitude he felt came to life when the opportunity to volunteer coach in the music department led by Peter Briggs at Lincoln High opened and he was able to coach and perform with the FYE Phones, the award-winning sax ensemble from Lincoln High.

Being involved with these amazing musicians’ lives has changed HIS life and continues toinspire and motivate him, onward!
