By Westport Volunteer Emergency Medical Service

Overview

The #1 cause of a preventable death after an injury is bleeding. This class will teach you how to save lives wherever life takes you.

STOP THE BLEED® Certification Class:

The American College of Surgeons’ STOP THE BLEED® program turns ordinary bystanders into immediate responders, giving you the skills to control life‑threatening bleeding before professional help arrives - at home, at work, or on the road.

In just 90 minutes you’ll learn—and practice—the three proven techniques that save lives:

  1. Apply focused pressure to the wound
  2. Pack and compress deep injuries
  3. Apply a tourniquet correctly and safely

What the course entails:

  • Brief interactive lecture: A trauma‑team instructor explains the physiology of bleeding, recognizing “red‑flag” injuries, and when to act. The updated 2025 curriculum features clearer visuals and real‑world scenarios to boost retention.

  • Hands‑on skill stations: Working with moulage trainers and commercial as well as improvised supplies, you’ll practice each technique under expert guidance until you can perform it confidently.

  • Scenario drills: Small‑group simulations reinforce decision‑making under stress and teach you how to integrate with 9‑1‑1 and EMS.

  • Certification & resources: Successful participants receive an ACS STOP THE BLEED® certificate (valid for two years) plus access to an online refresher module and downloadable reference cards for continued practice.
