IxDA Pittsburgh is a local chapter of the Interaction Design Association serving the design community in Pittsburgh through activities and discussions that facilitate growth, understanding, and development of the profession.Our monthly events include seminars, panels, and workshops. Rather than meeting on a specific day or week, we remain flexible, scheduling events to meet the availability of speakers, hosts, and organizers.Our members include anyone who is interested in facilitating positive and engaging experiences for people. Our practitioners are interaction designers, industrial designers, visual designers, product designers, developers, game designers, roboticists—you name it. IxDA Pittsburgh

Our final event for 2021 will be the 8th annual IxDebate in collaboration with IDSA Pittsburgh. 4 panelists, 1 empty chair.

<p>We were really hoping to hold this year’s IxDebate in person, but with COVID still disrupting our groove, we haven’t been able to find an appropriate venue. We hope you’ll still join us virtually as we welcome our friends in IDSA Pittsburgh to the party. That’s right, it’s Industrial vs. Interaction in a no-holds-barred battle for the title of Product Designer!</p><p>You know the format: We have four starting panelists and one empty chair. We draw pre-determined topics randomly from a hat. Only people sitting on the panel can speak, but you are welcome to grab the empty chair at any time to join in, at which point someone else on the panel must vacate theirs.</p><p>We’ll be announcing the members of our opening panel leading up to the event, and we’re taking debate topic suggestions during registration. Bring your own beverage of choice, and get ready to rumble!</p>

<h1>About Our Panelists</h1><h2>Chris Henley</h2><p>Chris Henley is a Pittsburgh-based Industrial designer with Eaton Corp. He currently works developing a range of products in the electrical sector, including receptacles, industrial controls, and power supplies. Previously, he worked for MSA Safety, developing next-generation safety gear for the Fire Service.</p>

<p>Chris graduated in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in industrial design from Carnegie Mellon University and has been an intermittent member of IDSA since then. His work focuses on highlighting the value of design and design research in safety applications, critical or hidden infrastructure, and hazardous environments.</p><p><em>We were informed by CMU faculty that Chris used to hang out in Newell-Simon Hall and pepper HCII grads with Nerf darts.</em></p>

<h2>Justin Adleff</h2><p>Justin Adleff is a design lead with over 24 years of comprehensive experience. He has gained most of his experience as a collaborative member on teams of multidisciplinary professionals engaging in new product development.</p>

<p>Justin’s experience spans human-centered design strategy, ethnographic research, visual brand language creation, manufacturing sourcing &amp; development, project management, and industrial design. He has become proficient at leading teams and delivering product experiences that expand business opportunities.</p><p><em>When we invited Justin to participate, he simply replied, “IxDA sUX!” We’re not even sure he’s showing up.</em></p>

<h2>Ryan Cummings</h2><p>Ryan Cummings has extensive experience building and leading UX teams and delivering large-scale projects in the retail, eCommerce, and healthcare sectors. Ryan is an expert in design and research and has led human-centered and design thinking efforts at scale. Ryan is the Director, Research Partners for UserZoom. His team provides strategic consulting services and onboarding for fortune 500 companies for UserZoom, an enterprise Saas platform for mix-method usability research &amp; user experience analytics.</p>

<p>Previously, Ryan served as the Director of User Experience (UX) Design in the Business Transformation Office (BTO) with UPMC leading UX efforts around the commercialization of a care management platform, HealthPLANet, and prior to that was the Director of UX for Consumer Innovation for UPMC Health Plan. His team advocated and led human-centered and design thinking efforts in the healthcare space that met members’ expectations. He served 5 years as a board member of Pittsburgh’s Interaction Design Association chapter (IxDA Pittsburgh), two years as a co-chair. He has also co-chaired the Midwest UX Design Conference, the first UX design conference to come to Pittsburgh, in 2015.</p><p><em>We’re not saying Ryan is prejudiced, but he has a reputation for putting interaction designers in lead positions over the industrial designers on medical device development projects.</em></p>
