IRT is a grassroots laboratory for independent theater and performance in New York City, providing space and support to a new generation of artists. Tucked away in the old Archive Building in Greenwich Village, IRT’s mission is to build a community of emerging and established artists by creating a home for the development and presentation of new work.This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in Partnership with the City Council, New York State Council on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, A.R.T./New York’s NYC Small Theatres Fund made possible with support from the Howard Gilman Foundation. Ivanov embodies the profound Toska in Chekhov’s writing-a sensation of great spiritual anguish, often without any specific cause... a dull ache of the soul. In Chekhov's world, there is no shared narrative to hold a community together-only the lonely stories individuals tell in a desperate attempt at self-justification. Ivanov embodies this failure: his efforts to frame his life as meaningful collapses into delusion, alienation, and cruelty. Ivanov’s failed attempt at self-justification mirrors today's America, where the erosion of the arts and the absence of shared cultural narratives reflect our country’s collective sense of Toska and it’s want for change.
