Italic Calligraphy Workshop

I’m a designer, letter artist, and calligrapher based in Katowice, Poland. I’m also an academic teacher at the Graphic Design Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice. In 2022 I earned my Ph.D. for the work on methodology and visual systems for teaching calligraphy to graphic design students.I conducted numerous live calligraphy workshops in Poland and elsewhere in places like Helsinki, Bratislava, and Zlin, to name a few. In addition, since 2016, I have run regular calligraphy workshops for Academy’s students. I’ve been successfully running online classes for two years now, having the opportunity to work with students from all over the world.

Get ready to learn the art of Italic Calligraphy. Starting on August 13th via Zoom.

<h2>About the course</h2>Discover the beauty and elegance of Italic calligraphy in this comprehensive workshop.Originating in the Renaissance period of Italy, Italic quickly spread to become one of the most popular calligraphy styles across Europe. Today, it remains one of the most practiced and cherished forms of calligraphy.In this comprehensive workshop, you will master basic techniques, proper letterforms, and spacing while delving into more advanced pen techniques. Discover subtle variations and new ideas to develop your unique style.The class is suitable for beginners and intermediate calligraphers.Schedule: Three weekly lessons will be held on Tuesdays – the 13th, 20th, and 27th of August. Each session will last 2 hours and 15 minutes, starting at 5:00 PM Central European Summer Time (UTC+2).Recordings: I’ll record each class and make it available for your review for three months. <h3>Course Outline:</h3>Day 1: A brief historical introduction and overview of inspirations, followed by style basics, fundamental strokes, letterforms, and spacing. Practice minuscule letterforms while addressing unique challenges within each group of letters.Day 2: Focus on the majuscule alphabet and explore simple swash capitals based on Roman Capitals proportions and variations of the letterforms.Day 3: At the start of lesson three, you will learn about diacritics, ligatures, numbers, and punctuation marks. Then, we will explore possible style variations that will enrich your calligraphy and inspire further practice.Homework &amp; Feedback: After completing the first and second classes, I will assign you homework to submit for my review.Who: This workshop is designed for adults with beginner to intermediate experience in broad-edge calligraphy. The class will be conducted in English.Handouts: Receive handouts with examples, letterform variations, exercises, hints, and more during the workshop. You will also receive additional recordings of me writing minuscule and majuscule alphabets group by group. The first part of the handouts will be provided a few days before the first session.Attendee Limits: minimum attendees: 10, maximum attendees: 35. If we do not reach the minimum number of attendees, the event will be canceled and tickets will be refunded.Supply list (not included in workshop fee):<ul><li>Set of broad-edged nibs along with penholders. I recommend the 3 mm Brause Bandzug, 3 mm Leonardt TAPE Nib, or Speedball C2 for most of the class. During the last lesson, we’ll also use smaller and bigger sizes.</li><li>Pilot Parallell Pen 3.8 mm (green cap).</li><li>Black gouache or non-waterproof ink.</li><li>A3 paper pads for drills. Not too heavy so that you can see the guidelines through. I recommend Fabriano Schizzi, Daler Rowney Fine Grain, Canson Marker, or similar.</li><li>B2 pencil, ruler, eraser.</li><li>Rag and set of containers for water and paint.</li><li>Old or cheap brush for loading the nib with the ink.</li></ul>Additional Prerequisites:Google account (for accessing the Google Classroom)In case of any questions about the workshop or registration, feel free to contact me directly.
