About this event

  • 13 hours 59 minutes

Would you like to learn wilderness and survival skills from the comfort of tent/car camping? then come to our overnight event from 10 AM Saturday to 2 PM Sunday. Bring the basics of everything that make you comfortable and choose how primitive you want to go.

We will cover survival basics such as:

Hazards and Safety:

Covers basic scenarios, prevention, and treatment. Learn to assess your situation and your hierarchy of needs. We cover major setbacks such as shock, snake bites, hypothermia, inclement weather, and animal attacks, as well as minor irritations like mosquito bites and sunburn.

Navigation and Getting Found:

What to do when you get lost, how to orient, find resources, and how to help others find you.

Shelter:

This hands-on activity goes over what makes a good shelter or a bad one. We will make models of wiki-ups, reflector walls, debris huts, and lean-to’s. Depending on turnout, we will make a functional shelter to be slept in at your discretion that is gently taken down at the end of the program.

Fire:

We cover starting methods, fuel (including what to do when it gets wet), fire ring set-up, etiquette, maximizing heat, extinguishing and safety. The main course of this program will be a friction fire workshop where everyone will go home with a bow drill kit, and a working knowledge of how to use it.

Plants:

We go into plant identification and beyond to learn anatomy and life cycles and how plants are food, medicine, poisonous, or useful as rope, soap, or insect repellent.

Animal Tracking and Building Awareness:

Learn to read the story in the tracks and how to gain the tools to solve natural mysteries.

Wild Crafts:

Depending on turnout and demand, we will have a wilderness skills craft made from wild material. Possible programs include dyes, cordage, jewelry and knots, containers (including bark baskets, coal burning, and basket weaving).

Campfire Cooking and Wild Edibles:

We will make tasty treats around the campfire, including appetizers, entrées, and desserts.

Frequently asked questions

How much will we be in an actual survival situation?

Not at all. This is an introductory class. Participation and engagement is up to you. For example, we will build a shelter that is able to be slept in. Sleeping in the shelter is entirely your choice. Peeling back your layers of comfort is on your terms.

What should I bring?

Bring most of what you would that makes you comfortable for a normal campout: tent, cooler, food, sleeping bag, etc. A supply list will be sent out after you register.
