Join professional artist and illustrator Emma Block for this fun and relaxed workshop learning to paint with gouache.


In this two hour workshop you will explore colour, find inspiration, practice bush strokes and create a beautiful floral still life painting.

Gouache a wonderfully versatile medium, best described as opaque watercolours. The workshop will cover creating various consistencies and effects with gouache, colour mixing, creating a limited colour palette and using expressive brushstrokes. After practicing these skills we will put them together too paint a beautiful floral still life. The workshop will be packed with demonstrations from Emma, tips, guidance and inspiration, with plenty of time to work on your final piece. This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and for those with previous painting experience.

The class includes all the materials you’ll need on the day and a hot drink from Patch. You’ll also come away with a full set of guide sheets, your beautiful painting and practice pieces, and a full set of professional brushes from ProArte worth £50, Emma‘s favourite brushes for painting with gouache.

This workshop will take place at the beautiful independent café Patch. Patch is in central Colchester and is easily reached by public transport from buses or the train and there are numerous carparks around Colchester. The venue is wheelchair accessible. If you have any particular access needs, please speak directly to the organiser.

Refunds are at the discretion of the organiser and dependent on having enough time to resell your ticket. If you cannot attend, please contact Emma at hello@emmablock.co.uk to discuss a possible refund. If you cannot attend tickets may be transferred to another person.

Emma is a professional artist and illustrator, who has written many best selling art books, including Getting Started with Gouache, Keeping a Creative Sketchbook and the Joy of Watercolour. She has taught thousands of students to paint online,and in person, and taught students from around the world at her popular painting retreats.

I haven’t picked up a paintbrush since I was in school, can I still come?

Yes! I hear this from people so often. This workshop is appropriate for complete beginners and I will be guiding you through step-by-step with plenty of one and one help. As an experienced teacher I’m used to gently encouraging and supporting students to listen up and explore their creativity!
