Introduction to Machine Sewing

The Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center is a multi-purpose cultural space in the Southeast community of Newport News, Virginia. Originally built as the Walter Reed School in 1917, our historic building has been restored and open to the public since October 2008.In addition to the 276-seat Ella Fitzgerald Theater, we haverooms for meetings and events, as well as studio space for visual and performing arts. The Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center is a facility of theCity of Newport Newsdepartment of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

Learn the basics of machine sewing with fashion designer, Amanda Campbell. These easy 2-hr classes will have you creating pieces in no time!

Downing Gross Cultural Art Center

Led by Amanda Campbell, this easy 2-hr class will guide you through the basics of machine sewing and have you creating pieces in no time! These classes are for ages 13+. Space is limited and registration is required. November Classes: Each class is available individually for $15 or purchase all three classes for $40.<ul><li>Class 1: The Basics of Machine Sewing - November 2. </li><li>Class 2: Finishing Edges - November 16. </li><li>Class 3: Gathers, Pleats, Darts and Sewing a Zipper - November 23. </li></ul>December Classes: &quot;Sew the Perfect A-Line Skirt&quot; is a 2-part series available in a package for $30. These classes are ONLY sold together and supplies are not included. The November classes are recommended as a prerequisite.<ul><li>Class 1: &quot;Sew the Perfect A-Line Skirt&quot; Part 1 - December 7</li><li>Class 2: &quot;Sew the Perfect A-Line Skirt&quot; Part 2 - December 14</li></ul>Materials required for the December class include:<ul><li>100% cotton fabric of their choice (QTY: 2 Yards)</li><li>Spool of matching thread (QTY: 1 spool)</li><li>7” inch all-purpose matching zipper (QTY: 1)</li><li>McCall’s pattern M7022 or M7631 in the appropriate size range for them (QTY: 1)</li></ul>About the Instructor: Amanda Campbell is the owner and designer for her brand, ABLE By Amanda Campbell.
