An introduction to FFmpeg, a command-line tool for creating and modifying and audiovisual files

This workshop will teach participants about FFmpeg, a command-line tool for creating and modifying and audiovisual files. Attendees will learn about how FFmpeg is used in archival production workflows, and get an introduction to the basics of using the tool. Please attend this webinar via a laptop/desktop computer in order to participate (e.g. it will be difficult to follow along on a tablet or phone). Having FFmpeg installed on your computer is not required for this workshop. Some experience with the command line is helpful. Files, commands, and resources will be provided. PRESENTER INFORMATIONAshley Blewer (she/her) is an archivist, software developer, and educator. She currently works as the sole developer for NPR's Research, Archives, and Data Strategy (RAD) team. She has worked for MediaArea, Artefactual Systems Inc., New York Public Library, University of South Carolina Moving Image Research Collections, for small archives collections, and in the private technology sector. As an educator, Ashley has taught information technology fundamentals at Pratt Institute, led several half-day workshops on MediaConch and QCTools, led multi-day events focused on the Archivematica digital preservation software, and given dozens of educational conference presentations on audiovisual technology. Ashley is the author of the Illustrated Guide to Media Formats series (published by Archives of Tomorrow) and Pragmatic Audiovisual Preservation (published by Digital Preservation Coalition). She holds a Master of Library and Information Science as well as a Bachelor of Art in Graphic Design from the University of South Carolina and is a graduate of the Flatiron School’s Web Immersive program. She is an active contributor to many open source software and resources for audiovisual preservation. Andrew Weaver is the Media Preservation Librarian at the University of Washington Libraries, where he is responsible for the physical preservation and digitization workflows of extensive film, audio and video collections. A firm believer in the importance of knowledge sharing within the A/V community, he is a frequent instructor at workshops and actively participates in open-source projects such as the digitization tool Vrecord. He holds a Master of Library and Information Science as well as a B.A. from the University of Washington.
