In the 20th century, artists began to look at textiles in a new way, as discoveries from around the world stirred up curiosity about traditional indigenous crafts. This exploration of texture, color and pattern resulting in a renaissance of hand-weaving in the Art World. Modern Tapestry Weaving is not complicated, or as rigidly defined as Traditional Pictorial Tapestries, instead, it relies on a playful experimentation. For inspiration, we will take a short Nature Walk before we begin.

Introduction 10am - 11:30 pm

We will discuss warp tension, color theory, and the properties of various fibers. The focus will be on selecting materials for a successful wall hanging project. Students will be provided with a small tapestry loom prepared for a 12 x 15” wall-hanging.

BREAK 11:30am - 12:30pm Bring a lunch!

Work Time 12:30 - 2:30pm

We will explore several techniques including color and weave in plain weave, weft-faced vs balanced weave, clasped warp and slits for weaving shapes, chain-stitch, twining, and knots. We will also address adding embellishments such as embroidery, inclusions and found objects.

Conclusion 2:30 - 3:30pm

We will be weaving in the ends, finishing the fringe and mounting the work for display to end with ashort Art Exhibit!
