Welcome to acrylic painting! In this hands-on 3-session Workshop you'll get familiar with all the essential materials and tools needed to paint with acrylic paint.
Week #1: Introduction to Acrylic Paint, Painting Techniques and Color Mixing
June 10th, 3-5 pm
In this session, we will cover the types of acrylic paints, brush shapes and care, canvas and palette options. You’ll learn about a variety of painting techniques like dry brushing, glazing, scumbling, and impasto.
We’ll also dive into the world of color mixing. You’ll build your own color wheel using just the primary colors and learn how to mix neutrals, tints, and shades. This session is all about exploration—no pressure to be perfect! You’ll leave with your own technique sampler and a color mixing canvas.
Week #2: Composition & Planning a Painting
June 17th, 3-5 pm
Now that you’ve got the basics down, it’s time to start planning your own original acrylic painting. We’ll talk about the elements of art and the foundations of good compositions. You’ll use a reference image of your choice to paint (landscape or still life) and learn techniques to transfer the image to a 16 x 20 canvas.
The color mixing experience you gained in Week #1 will be very helpful in Week #2. We will train our eyes to see colors like an artist, not just seeing a “red apple” for example, but instead finding all the tones of purples, greens, oranges and yellows that create depth. You’ll use a variety of techniques from Week #1 to begin painting your original art piece. We will paint from background to foreground, layering paint to create depth and harmony.
Week #3: Finish Painting & Final Details
June 24, 3-5pm
It’s time to bring your painting to life! Week #3 focuses on refining your composition through layering, detailing, and using glazes to build visual depth. We’ll walk through how to analyze your work at each step focusing on the elements of art.
You’ll finish your painting with final highlights and thoughtful brushwork, then learn how to protect it with varnish. After this 3-day workshop you will have a good understanding of various acrylic painting techniques. You will leave with an original art piece and with the skills to continue your acrylic painting journey on your own.
