Learn to safely use the professional-grade wood lathes at Clear Creek Makerspace and craft your own hardwood wand in this hands-on workshop! You’ll explore wood selection and prep, lathe safety, carbide tools, sanding, finishing, and custom design techniques.

This beginner-friendly class covers all the essentials for turning a unique wand—perfect for display, cosplay, or magical backyard duels. Completion qualifies you to use CCM’s lathes for future spindle-turning projects. All materials, tools, and supplies are provided, including a variety of hardwoods, dyes, and finishes.

This 2.5-hour course will cover topics such as:

  • Selecting and preparing hardwood
  • Centering and mounting your stock
  • Overview of the lathe and carbide turning tools
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Speeds and cutting techniques, like coves and beads
  • Sanding on the lathe
  • Dying, staining, and adding your own personal touches
  • Finishing

You will walk away with your own one-of-a-kind magic wand as well as the knowledge and skills to make other spindle-type projects at CCM or in your own workshop.

Dustin is a professional designer and woodworker with a deep appreciation for the history of design, particularly the elegance and restraint of midcentury modern aesthetics. Through his Wheat Ridge-based studio, Panel/Board Design & Assembly, he creates finely crafted furniture and objects that emphasize clean lines, rich materials, and quiet details.
