Event description

Description

This introductory online program is for those interested in learning about “scribing”—an artistic practice that visually represents ideas while people talk. You may be familiar with sketchnoting, mind mapping, or other graphic methods, and interested in learning how to integrate them into your work and use them in a facilitative way. In this 3-week learning journey, participants will take initial steps in scribing, in service of collective seeing, meaning-making and navigation. No prior drawing experience is required to participate.

OVERVIEW

Week 1: Overview, Markers/Supplies, Lettering
In this session we will set the foundation for the program by: getting to know one another; mapping the 3-week learning arc and model of learning; and establishing some key parameters for our time together. We will introduce the practice of scribing; discuss markers and supplies; and learn the basics of lettering.

Week 2: Drawing + Levels of Scribing
In this session, we will practice drawing basics, and introduce the four levels of scribing. We will also provide time to practice and discuss.

Week 3: Discernment + Layout
Here we explore a model for choice-making in scribing and use of space on the page. We will have time for practice, and close our program.

Participation

This workshop is ideal for those who want to start exploring the basics of visual practice and begin using drawing and visuals in their work, including leaders, facilitators and practitioners from all disciplines. Participants will be encouraged to apply their learning as much as possible between our online sessions. Drawing will be a primary form of practice. It is not required that participants have prior scribing experience – but be prepared to draw as one of the main modes of learning.

Please note: We will discuss the tools of the trade and recommendations, however the materials and supplies are not included.

Process

Online: Each 90-minute Zoom session will include: framing and content that we encourage participants to scribe; break out groups for sharing; full group reflection; questions and answers. All sessions will be recorded and shared in the Mighty Network space in case you aren’t able to participate in the live session. We also schedule two 45-min open question and answer sessions [Q&A] sessions with special guests, which will be recorded and shared.

Offline: Community space in Mighty Networks where participants can further share their insights from the live sessions, application in practice, images, questions, insights, and additional resources.
