Intro to Sashiko II: Make-a-Tea-Mat: A Free Form Tea Mat
This is a general introduction to Sashiko, the beautiful hand stitch.
To feel the movement of fabric and needle, a step-by-step demonstration. To feel the slowness of hand stitch and the elegance of the subtle texture.
Location: 41 Varick Ave, 101, Brooklyn, NY 11237
Time: 1:30PM-5:30PM

We are offering a 4-hour introduction Sashiko workshop for adults (18yrs and older), hosted in the Wenjüe Lu studio in Brooklyn. As a result, you will learn to make and bring home your own free form Sashiko tea mat.
In the beginning, you will learn to familiarize yourself with the Sashiko needle, thimble, and thread, and get to know and practice the fundamental running stitching movement.
Alongside other guests, you will be partaking in several essential steps of making the two-ply irregular-shaped Sashiko tea mat, including drawing out the pattern of your running stitch line on the fabric, making an invisible knot in the beginning and ending, and performing the newly learned Sashiko running stitch. The rest of the making process, including but not limited to machine sewing and ironing, will be handled by us unless requested otherwise (You will be responsible for your own safety in that case). Eventually, you will bring home your special handmade tea mat :)
At end of the workshop, you will have an idea of how Sashiko is done along with some basic understanding of sewing processes, and most importantly, the rewarding joy of do-it-yourself.
Notes:
*The pictured mats are for reference only, the final outcome may vary depending on the actual conditions.
