An interactive 2-part introduction to Python, a general-purpose programming language. 7/12&7/19

Have you ever wanted to learn how to code but didn’t know where to start? This beginner-friendly introduction to Python will help you discover the fundamentals of computer programming through hands-on activities, experimentation, and creative problem-solving. Over the course of this two-part workshop, students will learn by making predictions, testing ideas, writing and modifying code, and discovering how programming works through guided exploration. ,


Students should bring their own laptop and charger. Before class, students will receive instructions for installing the free software used during the workshop.

Printed workbook materials included.


Students will learn core Python concepts,conclude with a small project in which including:

  • Variables
  • Basic arithmetic
  • Input and output
  • Strings
  • Loops
  • Functions
  • Conditionals
  • Lists and basic data structures


The workshop will conclude with a small project in which students use their new skills to build something of their own, such as a simple game, calculator, utility, or interactive program.


About the Instructor:

Ian Frommer is a professor in the Department of Mathematics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, where he teaches computing, operations research, and mathematics. With over 20 years of experience as an educator, Ian has taught Python to both new and experienced programmers of all ages. He holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computation from the University of Maryland and an A.B. in Astronomy and Physics from Harvard College.
