
''Intro to Programming in Python'' (entering grades 6-12) (5 days)

* IT'S BACK! *
WHO: For tech-loving kids entering grades 9-12. Advanced middle schoolers welcome, too. Sixteen participants max. (This is for people new or fairly-new to Python. If you already have Python experience, see our intermediate-level course.)
WHEN: Mon 8/13 through Fri 8/17, from 1:00pm-4:00pm
ACTIVITIES: Python is the essential language for gaming, internet, and scientific programming. In the Introduction to Programming in Python course you will learn how to correctly use data types and variables to store data. You will also explore how to manipulate strings and use conditional statements effectively. The course will then cover While and For loops, based around the development of an advanced number guessing game. The course will also cover functions, lists and file handling, through the development of a trivia challenge game. Throughout the course you will learn the value of the iterative process of debugging, testing and refining your work. We'll have an outdoor break with snack midway.
WHAT TO BRING: Bring a Mac or Windows or Linux laptop. (For a few kids we can supply a computer. Inquire at info@mvgate.org.)
LOCATION: "Programming in Python" will be held at Branson School in Ross. Easy drop-off & pick-up on campus. Parents are responsible for timely pick-up at 4:00pm session end.
INSTRUCTOR: Tony Pound has been teaching computer science at The Branson School in Ross since August 2016. He currently teaches classes in web design, Java, Python and iOS mobile application development. He holds a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Psychology and Computing from the University of Plymouth (UK) and a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Bath (UK). Tony previously worked for a leading cellphone company in England as a software developer and team leader from 1998 to 2005 prior to becoming a computer science teacher. He was chair of computer science at Priory Community School in North Somerset, England from 2006 to 2015.
