Intro to OpenSpace

We are Space Apps NYC a grassroots space hacker community grown from theNASA Space Apps Challenge, founded to improve life on Earth and further the exploration of space. At over 3000 members, we’re the largest regional community of this type in the world, established in 2012 – and we’re creating a next generation space science & technology hub in New York City.

Space Apps NYC

OpenSpace is open source interactive data visualization software designed to visualize the entire known universe and portray our ongoing efforts to investigate the cosmos.
Funded in part by NASA, OpenSpace brings the latest techniques from data visualization research to the general public. OpenSpace supports interactive presentation of dynamic data from observations, simulations, and space mission planning and operations. OpenSpace works on multiple operating systems, with an extensible architecture powering high resolution tiled displays and planetarium domes, and makes use of the latest graphic card technologies for rapid data throughput. In addition, OpenSpace enables simultaneous connections across the globe, creating opportunity for shared experiences among audiences worldwide.

 The Space Apps NYC Bootcamp is a series of workshops designed to connect Space Apps Challenge hackers to tools and information which will prepare them for the hackathon. The bootcamp has two main themes: technology and science. We organize workshops run by our tech sponsors in which hackers are onboarded onto software tools and cloud platforms meant to improve the quality of their projects. We also organize science talks in which scientists from NASA and local academic institutions give in depth presentations on space science topics related to this year’s Space Apps Challenge.
Having attended the Space Apps NYC Bootcamp, hackers will be better equipped to choose a challenge, form a team, and then hit the ground running when the hackathon begins!
